dametheadee: (excuse me)

so I made it to the 4pm appointment yesterday without ripping the bandages off.  But it sure was a relilef when they took them off there!!   So a little more of a run-down on how things went...

For the surgery....
I went to the outpatient surgery center.  I was put in a room where they set me up on IV sedation and nerve blockers.  Yes, you read that right - no general anasthesia for me.  The surgery itself took about 1 1/2 hours all together.  I was aware of some things but couldn't feel anything on my face.  Now my shoulder was in a wierd position for most of the time and I could really feel that!

I also got a little panicky at one point because they had a plastic coated drape over my face with a hole cut out for the left eye, and at one point my claustrophobia started to kick in.  At that point, the nurse lifted the drape away from my face a bit, and they gave me more sedation.  Everything was OK after that.

Anyway, I got done with the surgery and the nurse immeditely put a patch on my left eye that would not allow the eyelid to move.  The stitches holding my cornea in place felt like they were stabbing the inside of the eyelid.  But they really weren't.  It was uncomfortable, but not painful.  The tape holding the whole mess on really itched, too.

So on to my 4pm appointment...
I got in there early (hubby drove) and felt a lot better when the bandage was taken off.  Then I discovered seom wonderful things!  While blurry, I can see out of my new cornea!  And I can read lines on the eye chart that I couldn't before.  Yay!!!  The doctor did a few tests and looked at the eye.  He said that he was really pleased, and that the progress was as good as he would normally expect one week post-op.  I realized that my depth perception was going to take some getting used to and I started feeling a little dizzy.

The doc has me on a regimen of drops and an ointment.  I can use artificial tears for comfort, and am to use safety style dark glasses any time I am out and about.  The doc suggested to use them even indoors at the store, as you never know who is going to come around the corner with a broomhandle.  He also said I need to wear a clear hard plastic shield over my eye at night so I don't get elbowed by the hubby or accidentally rub the eye.

I don't have to wear a patch otherwise.  The goal of all of the protective gear is just that - to protect the eye.  I am really encouraged that the vision in the left eye went from 20/400 to 20/150 in a day!!!  It is very watery and red right now, but that should ease up over time.  Next appointment is Thursday next week!!

Thanks for all the love and warm wishes.  I really appreciate them.  I am doing well, and am on the mend for sure.
